Overlooked movies you can stream right now!
With everyone stuck inside and clicking through their steaming services with an overwhelming buffet of possibilities I thought I'd throw in a few movie recommendations so you can avoid the inevitable, endless scrolling. I've included a few picks from the different streaming services: Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and Disney +. Check out some of these Hidden Gems!

Netflix

The Gift (2015)
I watched last year's Boy Erased (another excellent film) and saw that it was directed by Joel Edgerton (which he stars in as well) and saw that he had directed this well-reviewed movie as well. I went in mostly blind and had a great time with this stalkery thriller with great performances from the 3 leads. A tense film that's not overly scary but just creepy enough to keep you engaged.

About Time (2013)
This is one of the entries in the Rachel McAdam time travel rom-com trilogy (Midnight in Paris The Time Traveler's Wife complete the set) and it's just a fun British love story. If your a fan of director's Love Actually, you will be satisfied.

I am Mother (2019)
Ready for an original sci-fi flick that shows you that you don't a 100 million dollar budget to make a terrific film? This stripped down movie only has 2 on-screen actors and an over-bearing robot. If you like sci-fi with a solid story (that's not overly complex) this hits it's target.

Hulu

Little Monsters (2019)
I felt like Lupita Nyong'o was pretty much wasted in the Marvel and Star Wars Franchises, playing unnecessary and unremarkable characters. She proved in last year's Us how versatile she is and again shows off her range in Little Monsters as she plays the world's greatest kindergarten teacher who has to keep her class calm and safe when their field trip is interrupted by a zombie apocalypse.

Ingrid Goes West (2017)
Do you joke about your instagram addiction? Then you'll relate to Ingrid in this dramedy starring Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Olsen. Chock full of commentary on how social media has reshaped our lives, Ingrid goes West is depressing, enlightening and a solid recommend to anyone who has ever wanted to be insta-famous (don't lie, we all like attention)

Fighting with My Family (2019)
Florence Pugh is a star on the rise with starring roles in Midsommar and Little Women and co-starring in Black Widow when it comes out later this year. This cute, coming of age/underdog story has a lot of heart and is a very entertaining watch, even if you know nothing about the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) and just like a feel good film.
*also available on Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime

Troop Zero (2019)
I realized I didn't have too many PG-rated movies on this list and I know a know not everyone's in the mood for a dark comedy or zombie flick right now, so here's something light and sweet. Just a band of misfits trying to beat out the elites; this movie has shades of Little Miss Sunshine or The Sandlot. Enjoy!

Brittany Runs a Marathon (2019)
One of my favorite movies from last year, if you are runner and you like comedy, this one has your number. Jillian Bell is hilarious yet heart-breaking in this coming of age story that shows that one healthy habit can change a person's life.

Cabin in the Woods (2011)
This twisted homage to horror movies is highly enjoyable and has surprises around every corner. Even if you're not a horror movie fan, this has something for you. Written by Drew Goddard and Josh Whedon, this movie is clever and original and has an absolutely killer ending. Definite recommend.
*also available on Hulu

Disney +

The Great Mouse Detective (1986)
Here's one that all ages can enjoy. This pre-Little Mermaid Disney animated feature was mostly forgotten, but it's action packed and has one of the most despicable villains (Vincent Price's Professor Ratigan). A fun take on the Sherlock Holmes persona, it's a quick 74 minutes that will entertain.

Miracle (2004)
I'm not the biggest sports movie guy, but this one got to me. It's not overly-sentimental (seems pretty historically accurate) and fills one with hope and a little patriotism as well.

Treasure Planet (2002)
I love this overlooked animated film. This came out when Pixar and Shrek were all the rage and traditional animation was on it's way out. Disney's futuristic take on Treasure Island, this swashbuckling adventure-fest has a terrific Goo Goo Dolls power ballad and a talented voice cast.

*all movies currently on streaming as of April 20, 2020
