Best Picture Oscar Nominees Ranked

Best Picture Oscar Nominees Ranked:

I've ranked my Oscar Nominees for this year, I still haven't seen Room or Bridge of Spies but the rest are up here! I was pleasantly surprised that they all were worthwhile and didn't seem too oscar-baity.

#1 Mad Max: Fury Road

This movie is so unlike anything you would think of when you think of an Oscar-nominated film. Well, it does have Tom Hardy in it, but he's arguably not even the main character. Chances are you've probably heard already how amazing this movie is from someone who loved it, and they are right. It definitely has a TON of action but it all works together with the stylistic editing and thematic set pieces to bring you a coherent and enjoyable story. I like the dialogue (as limited as it is) and I would say it has pretty solid character development (Mainly between Max and Furiousa). Acting wise, I personally think Nicholas Hoult is the standout in the film and the false idol worshipping war pup. And Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy are excellent as well.

#2 Brooklyn

Such a charming and uplifting story with a wonderful performance from Saoirse Ronan. I was completely engaged the whole time even though the premise is simple enough. The dialogue is brisk and the drama is powerful. A wonderful film that shows that a straightforward plot can bring out a sense of sincerity in the way that you tell it.

#3 The Revenant

The way the action is portrayed in the revenant is so brutal and immersive. Of course this makes some of the scenes (i.e. bear fight) extremely hard to watch. However, I was enthralled the whole time and while the scenes were painful, they seemed necessary. Tom Hardy I thought was the real stand out in the movie, as the villain that you can reason with, but Leo was excellent as well. The movie tense and but didn't overdue the drama.

#4 The Big Short

I left this movie feeling pissed off. I still can't figure out if that's a good think but I think that is Adam McKay's intention. The financial crisis affected so many people and the ones to blame got off scott-free and hard-working everyday people payed off their debts. The dialogue is rapid and the economic jargon is pretty hard to understand (even when they try to re-explain it). But the movie is funny and quite enjoyable. And I feel like I learned something. The standout here is Steve Carrell as an angrier version of Michael Scott from the office.

#5 Spotlight

Another tense film that keeps you in the realm of slight discomfort. I was happy that the story moved rather briskly and all the actors seemed to work together really well. While I really liked the concluding moral (we're all to blame when we turn a blind eye) the movie didn't stick with me quite like some of the other nominees. Ruffalo I thought was the standout as an overly passionate reporter.

#6 The Martian

I liked this movie a lot, however I didn't have the same emotional connection to it as I did to Gravity. I felt that some of the movie was too polished and had too much math to allow me to connect more with Matt Damon's character. And the scenes on earth got a little tiresome. However I know that this was based on a book and overall this is a spectacular film that still inspires.

I'm also highly looking forward to "Room" which seemed very intriguing and kind of looking forward to "Bridge of Spies." Thanks for reading!
